This is about eight percent of its 18,200-person global workforce. Just for the first half of the year 2017, LEGO laid off 1,400 employees. As the shift of childhood attention turns into video games and screens, the task for LEGO is to remain relevant. LEGO has continuously adapted to the evolution of childhood playtime. Compared to other materials, this plastic is less toxic and is more heat resistant. Today, LEGO bricks are made from acrylonitrile butadiene styrene, or ABS plastic. These bricks are called “automated binding bricks” which serve as the precursor of today’s LEGO bricks. By the late 1940s, LEGO would switch to a form of plastic called cellulose acetate.
